Sarah has really done an amazing thing in finally blending the systematic, regimented protocol of EMDR with the intuitive, somatically and energy based practice of partnering with horses. It truly feels like science meets art in an alchemical mix that is transformational for clients and practitioners.

This Equine Assisted EMDR training was the most professionally and personally helpful and inspiring training I have ever participated in. I feel a renewed sense of excitement about my work as a psychotherapist as well.

At EMDRIA conferences Dr. Francine Shapiro would encourage all of us trained in EMDR to return to our communities & help our military suffering with PTSD. In 2014, I felt the need to start a non profit to work with our military. As a Certified EMDR therapist & new horse owner I thought there must be a way to combine the two disciplines. Viola! I happened to see Sarah's Equine-Assisted EMDR training posted on the EMDRIA website. Now, 5 years later, we established Equines For Freedom. With Sarah’s guidance & expertise we have developed a successful program treating veterans & first responders with complex PTSD.

As an equine specialist coming into the mental health field, I had so much to learn to best be able to support the therapists I work alongside. The Equilateral training program, both the webinars & the practicum, were rich with valuable information, clear & concise explanations & opportunities to ask questions. I came away with a solid understanding of the eight phase EMDR protocol & ideas of how to incorporate horses to better facilitate this process within my team. Sarah has always made herself available to answer questions & consult with both mental health & equine professional team members. I have not hesitated to recommend Equilateral: The Equine Assisted EMDR Protocol to many others in this field, & absolutely will continue to do so.

EquiLateral: The Equine Assisted EMDR Protocol addresses the many challenges that EMDR and Equine Assisted Therapy (EAP) professionals experience when working with complex trauma.
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is a comprehensive & integrative treatment of choice for trauma treatment. EquiLateral™ is the Equine Assisted EMDR Protocol, the premiere integration of Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and EMDR to become Equine Assisted EMDR.
We want to help our clients heal their hearts. We want them to feel safe and grounded. But, we also know that it may not be that simple. How do we help them to trust us, when perhaps we humans hurt them the most?
As a trauma and dissociation specialist I know that the gradual and staged approach to trauma treatment is a foundational principal, regardless of whether doing equine-assisted work or EMDR therapy. In fact, it is a standard, regardless of treatment modality.
As a life-long horsewoman, I was also deeply saddened when I would see clients, and horses, often often blasted out of their window of tolerance in order to complete very task oriented EAP (Equine Assisted Psychotherapy) activities. Instead, I wanted to offer and teach an equine facilitated trauma treatment that didn't reenact trauma in clients or horses, put clients into reliving, and possibly even increase their dissociative symptoms. Instead, the traumatic material needed to fully process to heal.
So, with this in mind, I created EquiLateral: The Equine Assisted EMDR Protocol (EA-EMDR) as an approach to equine-facilitated trauma treatment that would truly partner with the equine, but also in a phased and clinically sound manner. I started to create and wrote my protocol for Equine Assisted EMDR, EquiLateral, back in 2002, when I first intuitively knew that EMDR and Equine Assisted Therapy could be successfully integrated to become Equine Assisted EMDR. Fast forward to 2011, and the first Equine Assisted EMDR training was approved. As an EMDR International (EMDRIA) Approved Trainer and Consultant and lifelong horsewoman, I am pleased to invite you to join me in healing hearts, and restoring lives, through Equine Assisted EMDR.
